§ Sailboats not under power and boats propelled by oars or paddles have the right of way over motorboats.
§ It is unlawful to consume alcoholic beverages when piloting a boat. This law is enforced by the officers patrolling the lake.
§ Obtain and review the boating and fishing laws of both NC and VA. What applies in one may not apply in the other.
§ In North Carolina and Virginia a child 14 to 16 years old may operate a PWC IF they carry proof of age and proof of having completed a Safe Boating Course.
§ Create a Boat Plan! Let people know where you are going and when you will return.
§ Take advantage of the free Boat Safety Inspections offered by the USCG Auxiliary throughout the boating season.
§ Sign up for one of the Safe Boating Courses given by the USCG Auxiliary, NCWR, or VDGIF.
§ If you are going to be away from your property for any length of time you should be sure that all your vessels are properly tied off and raised as high as your boat lifts will allow.
